How to Set Up Static Addresses With the Linksys WRT54G

The Linksys WRT54G is a popular and versatile router designed for the home networking market. It is traditionally used so that an entire household or small business can share a single Internet connection. By default, the WRT54G is configured to receive a DHCP IP address from the Internet Service Provider (ISP). In some situations, the WRT54G needs to be configured for static routing, such as when the ISP configures the network to give you a single static IP address.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a web browser on a computer that is connected to the WRT54G.

    • 2

Type the address "192.168.1.1" in the address bar and press "Enter."

    • 3

Leave the username blank and type "admin" (without quotes) for the password. Press the "Enter" key to log in.

    • 4

Click the "Static IP" option under the "Internet Setup" section.

    • 5

Enter the static IP information provided by your ISP. This includes an IP address, the subnet mask, the default gateway and the DNS server.

    • 6

Click the "Save Settings" button at the bottom of the screen when finished. This forces the WRT54G to reboot and use the new settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • After the WRT54G reboots, open a web browser on a computer that is connected to the network and go to any website to verify that the static IP settings are correct.
