How to Convert Thrust to HP

Thrust and power are not directly related quantities, meaning there isn't a simple conversion factor to change from one unit of measurement into another. Thrust is a measurement of force on an object, usually measured in Newtons or pounds. Power is a measurement of work, or the amount of motion exerted on a body over the course of time by a force. Power is typically measured in units of horsepower (HP) or kilowatts. To convert from thrust (force) to horsepower requires you apply the distance moved and the time required.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the basic relationship formula: Power = Force X (distance/time).

    • 2

Divide the distance the object was moved (measured in feet) by the time it took to move it (measured in minutes.) This gives you a quotient measured in feet per minute.

    • 3

Multiple the above quotient with the force (or thrust) applied to the object. The force should be measured in pounds. The resulting answer (power) is now in foot-pounds per minute.

    • 4

Convert power to horsepower. One horsepower equals 33,000 foot-pounds per minute. So divide your power by 33,000 to change it to measurements of HP.
