How to Clean Liquid Makeup Brushes

How to Clean Liquid Makeup Brushes thumbnail
Liquid foundation brushes should be cleaned at least once a week.

Makeup brushes are essential tools in any cosmetic kit. While each brush requires cleaning, brushes used to apply liquid makeup require weekly washings, depending on the frequency of use. Makeup brushes can harbor bacteria, dirt, oil and infectious agents such as fungus, parasites and viruses, according to dermatologist Dr. Jeannette Gra. Since bacteria thrives in a moist environment, brushes used to apply liquid or cream makeup such as foundation, concealer, lipstick and blush require special care. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hold your makeup brush under a stream of running water. Moisten the bristles but avoid getting the handle and bristle base wet. Water may dissolve the glue holding the bristles in place.

    • 2

Squeeze 1 to 2 drops of soap onto the bristles of your makeup brush. Swirl the soapy bristles into the palm of your hand to create a lather.

    • 3

Rinse the soap from the bristles under the stream of water.

    • 4

Repeat these steps until the water runs clear while rinsing.

    • 5

Wring the water from the bristles gently, squeezing out as much water as possible. Lay the brush flat on a clean towel.

    • 6

Cover the brush with another clean towel. This will protect against any dust or bacteria settling atop the wet bristles while drying.

Tips & Warnings

  • Spot-clean your liquid makeup brushes everyday using an alcohol-based brush cleanser.
