How to Print Folders

In Windows 95, you were able to print the contents of any folder found on your system. This was particularly useful if you wanted to maintain backup records of your files, communicate information to a computer technician, edit the contents of a folder, or compare the contents with another folder. Unfortunately, subsequent versions of the Windows operating system made printing the contents of a folder very difficult. Windows 7, however, allows you to print the contents of a folder using the Command Prompt.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," "All Programs," and "Accessories."

    • 2

Right-click "Command Prompt" and select "Run as Administrator" from the menu that appears. Click "Yes" if asked to confirm.

    • 3

Type "cd\program files" (without the quotation marks) into the Command Prompt, and press "Enter." Note that "cd" should be replaced with the drive where the folder you want to print is located. For example, "cd" refers to the C drive. Note also that "program files" should be replaced with the name of the folder that you want to print.

    • 4

Type "cls," (without the quotation marks) and press "Enter."

    • 5

Type "dir>contents.txt" (without the quotation marks) into the Command Prompt and press "Enter."

    • 6

      Close the Command Prompt.

    • 7

Click "Start," and type the name of the folder you want to print into the "Search" box and press "Enter." The folder opens.

    • 8

Double-click the "Contents.txt" file. A document containing a detailed list of all the files in the folder opens.

    • 9

Click "File," then "Print" to print the document.
