Servicing your Schwinn can be done in a matter of minutes.

Cleaning and servicing a Schwinn bicycle goes a long way in keeping your ride smooth and your bike in good condition. Servicing a Schwinn is simple to do and can be done using just a few tools and in a matter of minutes. Taking time to do a service every 500 to 1,000 miles will keep your Schwinn bicycle in optimum condition.

Clean, wipe and lubricate the chain. A well-used Schwinn bicycle will need its chain cleaned and oiled when servicing. To do this, use a light oil designed for bicycle chains and spray it on the chain mechanisms sparingly. Lubricate the chain as you turn the pedals backward, but Schwinn recommends to "wipe off the excess with a soft cloth or rag." The Schwinn bike website also suggests using a special oil that can be purchased at Schwinn retailers.

To avoid a potentially dangerous situation, be sure that you inspect your brakes during your Schwinn servicing. Make sure that your brake pads are properly aligned and free of any debris such as dirt or leaves. If there is debris, clear it during your service. Squeeze each brake to be sure that the brake lever is moving smoothly when in use.

Lubricate all moving parts of your Schwinn bicycle. Schwinn bicycle brakes and pedals are examples of moving parts of a bike. Pedals should be lubricated so that they pedal smoothly. You want to avoid any squeaks or noises while pedaling, so apply a lubricant, test the pedal and then apply more if necessary.

Check your recommended tire air pressure (it will be listed on the sidewall of the tire), then inflate the tire using a tire gauge to check the air pressure. The bicycle tire can be inflated using a manual pump or an air pump. However, Schwinn suggests using a good floor pump that has a gauge, "so there's no guesswork." Many are available that use both types of valve stems.
