How to Unlock a Mounted Drive

Your computer's internal hard drives can be locked or unlocked through a DOS prompt in Windows. If you have a locked mounted internal hard drive, you will need to unlock it to write information to it. Locking hard drives is a precautionary measure to make sure no sensitive data can be erased. Unlocking your hard drive will allow you to write information to it again. Unlocking a mounted internal hard drive will take about five minutes.

Instructions

1. Click "Start" then click "Run."

2. Type "cmd" at the prompt then hit "Enter."

3. Type "unlock y" where "y" represents the letter of the locked hard drive. For example, if your mounted drive letter is "c" you would type "unlock c"
