How to Find Domain Names for a Company

Take care when choosing your company's domain name.

Having a presence on the Internet is beneficial for practically any company. A good company website lets people know about your company and what goods or services you offer. Finding a domain name for your website is nearly as important as the website itself and requires careful consideration. When choosing a company domain name think about the name of your company, what people will enter into an Internet search engine when trying to find the goods or services offered by your company and keywords that will result in a high search engine ranking.

Instructions

1. Make a list of keywords that describes your company and what it offers. This list should include your company's name as well as keywords that are related to the nature of your company's business. Think of keywords that are powerful, descriptive and easily remembered by potential customers. A domain name that contains often searched for keywords will help your website achieve a higher search engine ranking.

2. Prioritize the top-level domains that you would like for your company's domain name. Top-level domains such as .COM, .ORG and .NET tend to be more valuable and considered by potential customers as more reputable than the more uncommon top-level domains such as .INFO, .MOBI and .US. Make sure your list includes which less common top-level domain names that you will accept if your preferred domain is not available in the .COM, .ORG and .NET top-level domains.

3. Prepare a list of potential company domain names using the keywords from Step 1 and the top-level domains from Step 2. The domain names should suit your company's image and what your company offers. There is a very good chance that your first choice of domain name will be unavailable because someone else owns it. There is a good chance that your second and third choices of domain names will also be unavailable. Preparing a list of good potential domain names before purchasing one will result in less frustration and ultimately a better company domain name than thinking of a domain name off the top of your head if your first few choices are unavailable.

4. Find an available domain name for your company. Open your Internet browser and navigate to a website that sells domain names. Type your first choice of potential domain name into the website's domain search box. You will be notified if the domain name is available and offered alternative domain names if your domain name is not available. Continue entering potential company domain names from your list into the website's domain search field until you find a domain name that is available and suitable for your company. Once a good domain name is found, you can purchase it and start promoting your website.
