How to Melt an Ice Cube With Salt

Melt an ice cube by applying salt.

A great experiment to try with kids is melting ice cubes with salt. Since salt dissolves in water, it changes the molecular structure of the ice cubes when you sprinkle it on them. The changed molecular structure causes the ice to melt faster than ice in its pure state. You can see this experiment in action on snowy days when ice is applied to snowy streets after a storm. This action clears up the streets faster than waiting for the ice to melt on its own.

Instructions

    • 1

Get an ice cube and place it on a plate.

    • 2

Get a salt shaker and sprinkle some ice on the ice cube.

    • 3

Notice the ice cube melting when the salt is applied.

    • 4

Add more salt to make the ice cube melt faster and observe the results.
