Soaring unemployment rates and an ever-fluctuating economy causes financial crisis for many people. As a result, families need assistance locating agencies that provide food, clothing and monetary donations. Fortunately, resources are available for residents experiencing economic hardship in Volusia County, Florida. Many agencies offer temporary housing, emergency financial, food, clothing and childcare-related assistance for qualifying families. Other organizations provide community referrals to additional agencies offering services for low-income individuals and families. Specific requirements and guidelines to receive services vary by organization.

      Log on to the Volusia County Human Services' website. View each agency's contact information and visit one of the four offices. This agency assists people experiencing temporary unemployment, and other emergency situations with rent, mortgage and utility payments. Applications are taken Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Interviews are by appointment only.

      Call Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) at 386-252-0156 for an appointment. HUM provides homeless and low-income people with food, clothing and financial assistance. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. A referral from the United Way or Family Welfare is needed to receive services.

      Contact the Neighborhood Center of West Volusia at 386-734-8120 for emergency financial assistance. The agency also provides shelter and access to the food pantry for individuals currently working or wanting future employment. A valid photo ID and Social Security card are required to receive services.
