How to Plan a Trip to Athens

Centrally located, Athens is the capital of Greece and has been an active metropolis since antiquity. Among its unique traits, Athens provides a fantastic juxtaposition between the ancient and modern worlds through numerous tourist attractions, including the Acropolis and the Parthenon. With an abundance of museums, parks, beaches, shops, restaurants, bars and clubs, Athens is a prime vacation destination for anyone, from architectural enthusiasts to students to those simply needing time away from home.

1. Set a budget. This will help you determine a variety of things, including for how long and where you will stay in Athens and what attractions you see. Plan to contribute monthly to your budget, if possible.

2. Decide when and for how long you would like to go. Keep in mind that with any destination, certain times of the year are better for traveling than others. According to Frommer's, Athens has the best weather between mid-March and May. Typically during these months airfare is cheaper, so visiting during this time might have financial benefits. In Athens the summer months get hot, and often the temperature reaches over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Fall is somewhat more mild, and from November to February the city experiences its rainy season.

3. Book your airfare and hotel at the same time. Using travel websites such as Expedia and Priceline may help you save money if you book your airfare and hotel together.

4. Decide what attractions you would like to visit. Athens has numerous ancient sites, museums, shopping districts and Olympic monuments that are worth visiting.

5. Determine whether you would like to take a day trip. There are many archaeological sites worth seeing outside of the city.

6. Plan on trying Greek cuisine at a local restaurant. There are many restaurants to choose from in the different districts of Athens, and each has its own specialties. Research a list of restaurants before you leave. This will help organize your itinerary even more. Be adventurous!

7. After all your planning, enjoy your trip! Take photos, visit sites and be adventurous.
