According to the Legislative Analyst's Office, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, also known as the CDCR or CDC, housed more than 170,000 inmates in 2010. Each incarcerated inmate is given an inmate number. This number stays the same for the length of his incarceration. To find out the location of an inmate, be prepared to provide the inmates CDC number or his full name and date of birth. The CDC's Identification Unit is responsible for providing information on an inmate's whereabouts.

      Call the CDC's Identification Unit at: 916-445-6713. This unit is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding state holidays.

      Request information on an inmate's current location. Anyone can request this information.

      Tell the CDC representative the CDC inmate identification number when prompted.

      Go to the CDC's Inmate Locator online.

      Click "Agree" to agree to follow CDC's search terms and conditions.

      Enter the CDC inmate number into the corresponding field and hit "Search."

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also send a fax for more information on an inmates whereabouts. Make sure to include the reason for the inquiry and inmate's CDC number on the fax. Also include a mailing address so the CDC can send you the requested information. The CDC Identification Unit fax number is: 916-322-0500.
