How to Load a Truck Camper

Your truck camper is your home away from home on hunting, fishing and camping trips. Many campers are fully self-contained with a stove, refrigerator, bathroom and bed, offering the comfort of a house when you're on the road. Before you can enjoy your camper, you'll need to load it onto your pickup truck. This task requires less than 20 minutes of your time and a little patience.

Get in your pickup, line it up with the front of the camper and back it up as close as you can. Exit the truck, and raise the camper up using the provided jacks. Beginning in the rear, slowly lift the jacks 2 to 3 inches at a time. Repeat this in the front of the camper until it is 2 to 3 inches above the pickup bed.

Back up your truck slowly until it is completely under the camper, paying close attention to keeping it as straight as possible. Back up until the front of the camper touches the truck's cab. Put the pickup in "Park," turn it off and press the parking brake.

Exit the truck and lower the jacks 2 to 3 inches at a time, beginning in the front, until the camper is sitting in the truck bed. Retract the jacks.

Begin in the front, and place one hook of a turnbuckle into the hole in your pickup's tie down, and the other hook into the eyelet on the camper. Tighten the turnbuckle as much as possible, and repeat this step for all four tie downs. Go back and re-tighten all turnbuckles once you've connected them all, ensuring it is as tight as possible. Plug the wire harness coming out of your truck into the camper's input.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may have to readjust several times before the truck is completely lined up with the camper.
