How to Stop Chkdsk Utility

The Chkdsk utility is a Windows system program designed to inspect damaged files and hard-drive clusters. If the utility is unable to perform any given task, you may schedule it to run during your next Windows session. Additionally, if a certain hard drive is becoming corrupted, the Chkdsk utility will periodically detect its errors and attempt to fix them while Windows is loading. If you wish to stop the Chkdsk utility from running, you can efficiently disable it from the Windows Services configuration screen.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" and type "Services.msc." Press "Enter" on your keyboard to open the Services utility.

    • 2

Click the "HKey_Local_Machine" folder. Select "System," then "CurrentControlSet," followed by "Control" and finally "Session Manager." From the right-side pane, double click the "BootExecute" entry.

    • 3

Delete any entry following the "Checkdisk Chkdsk *" string. All commands written after this will disable all scheduled Chkdsk commands, effectively preventing it from running. Press "OK" to save your changes, then exit the Windows Services utility.
