How to Decline a Date Invitation

For various reasons, it is sometimes necessary to decline a date invitation. Sometimes, people receive invitations from people that they don't like and/or have no interest in dating, while other times, plans prevent them from accepting the invitation. Whatever the reason, declining an invitation politely is the best way to avoid hurting the feelings of the person who has extended the invitation.

Instructions

1. Explain that you have prior plans. Offering a short explanation of these plans (previously made plans with friends, out-of-town trips, appointments, etc.) and a sincere apology is the best way to communicate that you wish that you could go, but are unable to.

2. Politely explain that you aren't interested in dating. You don't have to tell the person that you are not interested in dating them specifically, simply explain that you aren't looking for a relationship right now, but that you appreciate their interest and the invitation.

3. Give a specific reason for declining when it is appropriate and applicable. For example, if your boss or a co-worker asks you on a date and you don't want to date them because you are afraid that it will make things awkward in the workplace, say so. Even if the person's feelings are hurt, they will also appreciate your honesty and forthright attitude.
