How to Create a Letter Head in Word

Don't purchase an expensive letterhead to print letters and documents on nice stationery. Instead, design your own custom letterhead templates using Microsoft Word. Type your letters and documents directly onto the template and print the letterhead and the document simultaneously. Use a template as often as you need and print on any style or color of paper you choose.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a blank document in Microsoft Word.

    • 2

Click the "Insert" tab from the top toolbar.

    • 3

Click "Header" from the toolbar to insert a header into your document. This will be the design area for your letterhead.

    • 4

Click inside the header area on your document.

    • 5

Type the name of your organization and any other relevant information you would like to include, such as an address, phone number, fax number or email address. Use font sizes and styles to make important information, such as your organization name, stand out.

    • 6

Click "Picture" from the "Illustrations" group to browse your computer and import a digital image of your organization's logo.

    • 7

Click outside the header area to return to the main document. The content in the header will gray out and be unmovable until you click inside the header again.

    • 8

Navigate to the "Page Layout" tab.

    • 9

Click the "Margins" icon to type in a new top page margin. You will probably need to make the margin larger to accommodate the content of your header. This allows your documents to begin under the header, instead of typing over it.

    • 10

Save your letterhead template as a file to your computer. You can now type on this template and print the letterhead along with your letters and documents.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also create a footer design for your letterhead in the same way as you created your header. You may need to alter your bottom margins to accommodate this.

  • When you open a template to begin a new document, be sure to save the template as a new file name.
