Installation Instructions for Grass Hinges

Installation Instructions for Grass Hinges thumbnail
Grass hinges are completely concealed.

Grass hinges, better know as European hinges, have a good reputation in the commercial cabinet-making industry as well as for custom cabinetwork. When you close the cabinet door, you can't see the hinge. Each hinge has at least two screws for adjusting the door to make it square with the cabinet and the doors around it. Manufactured in Europe, Grass hinges use the metric system for sizing the holes and screws. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Place one of the cabinet doors face down on a worktable. Measure from the top of the door and make a mark at 2 3/4-inch close to the hinge side for the door. Put the combination square on the mark and draw a 1-inch line from the hinge side of the door. Repeat this from the bottom of the door.

    • 2

Make a mark on those lines 13/16-inch from the hinge side of the door. These lines cross at the center point of the cup hole for the hinge. Drill a hole 1/2-inch deep with a 1 3/8-drill bit (35mm).

    • 3

Insert the hinge cup in the hole and square it with the hinge side of the door. Trace the inside of the holes for the screws onto the door. Remove the hinge from the door and drill pilot holes 3/8-inch deep with a 1/8-inch drill bit.

    • 4

Put the hinge cup back in the hole and line up the pilot holes with the screw holes in the hinge. Secure the hinge to the door with the 1/2-inch wood screws.

    • 5

Hold the door in its open position on the cabinet so that the mounting plates are against the inside wall of the cabinet side. Trace the screw holes in the mounting plates onto the cabinet side with a pencil then remove the door. Drill a pilot hole 3/8-inch deep with a 1/8-inch drill bit for each screw. Hold the door back in place and secure it to the cabinet with the wood screws.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adjust the door to fit the cabinet with the adjusting screws located on the hinge arm with a screwdriver.

  • Install the screws slowly to prevent stripping the threads.
