Plans for Building an Outdoor Kitty Shelter

Plans for Building an Outdoor Kitty Shelter thumbnail
All cats need shelter, make one from storage bins.

Cats are resilient creatures, but during winter months even the toughest cats need shelter. It is easy to build a simple, insulated, waterproof shelter using a few supplies from a local home-improvement store. The shelter is portable and can be delivered anywhere there are cats that need protection from the elements. With a removable lid, it is easy to clean out and replace bedding.

Things You'll Need

  • One rubberized storage bin, 50 gallon capacity
  • One rubberized storage bin, 90 quart capacity
  • Utility knife
  • Piece of carpet, 12" by 12" by 28"
  • Bubble wrap
  • Two bicycle tire inner tubes

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a six-inch in diameter hole into one of the smaller sides of the 50 gallon bin, using a utility knife. Cut another six-inch in diameter hole into the smaller side of the 90 quart bin.

    • 2

Place bubble wrap into the larger bin, then put the smaller bin into the larger bin. Be sure the holes line up. Place your carpet on the bottom of the smaller bin.

    • 3

Stuff bubble wrap into the space between the walls of the two bins. Do not block the hole, as this is the cat's entrance/exit. Put the lid on the smaller bin. Cover the top of the lid with bubble wrap.

    • 4

Place the lid on the larger bin.

    • 5

Wrap the inner tubes around the bin, equally spaced. They will act as straps, holding the larger bin closed, despite the elements outside.

Tips & Warnings

  • For extra comfort, place foam, blankets or any soft bedding on top of the carpet, before attaching the lids.

  • The inner tubes also can be used as handles to carry the shelter.

  • You can substitute inner tubes for strong, weather-resistant tape.

  • You may use foam, home insulation or straw in place of bubble-wrap.
