How to Calculate Nut Slot Depth
Calculating the slot depth for a guitar nut is a difficult process that requires trial and error. The slot depth alters the height of the strings over the fingerboard, referred to as the action. The effect on the action is less than is produced by adjusting the bridge, but it is still significant. The preferred string height varies per the guitarist.

Place a ruler flat across the first and second frets.

Measure the distance between the ruler and fingerboard using calipers. Add 0.005 to 0.010 inch to the measurement. (Add an additional 0.002 inches for the bass strings.)

Repeat the steps if the final nut slot depth resulted in the strings being too high or too low. Increase the value if the strings are too low. Decrease it if the strings are too high.

Always underestimate the nut slot depth if you are unsure how deep it should be.
You can go back and cut the nut slots deeper if your initial calculations are too shallow. You have to start over if you accidentally cut the nut slots too deep.
