Freeze Dry Chicken Treats

Buying freeze-dried chicken treats for your dog can be expensive. It is possible to freeze dry your own chicken treats at home. The key aspects of freeze drying are to make sure that any excess moisture has been removed from the meat and then to freeze it quickly. Conventional freezers will not work -- they freeze the food too slowly. You will need to purchase dry ice for the second stage of the freeze-drying process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your chicken into strips and marinate with any flavor or seasoning you choose. Lay the chicken strips out on your oven tray, evenly spaced, and cook at 180 degrees F for around 3 to 4 hours.

    • 2

Remove the chicken strips from the oven. All the moisture in the meat will have evaporated.

    • 3

Put the chicken jerky into a vacuum bag and seal using a counter top vacuum bag-sealer. If you do not have a counter top sealer, force as much air out of the vacuum bag as possible and then seal.

    • 4

Line the bottom of the cooler with dry ice. Place the vacuum-sealed jerky on top and then cover with more dry ice. Place the lid on the cooler.

    • 5

Remove the chicken from the cooler after 30 minutes. It is now freeze dried and can be stored in your conventional freezer for as long as you please.
