How to Sell a Car in Tennessee
If you have a car in Tennessee that you no longer want or need to keep, you can sell the car on your own. Selling a car on your own instead of trading it in usually results in you getting more money for the vehicle. You can attempt to sell your car in Tennessee either online or using print publications. When you sell a car in Tennessee, you are required to take care of all of the sales paperwork, such as the bill of sale and title.

1
Clean your car, both inside and out, before taking photographs of it. If there is any damage to the vehicle, you will need to take a close-up photo of it to properly disclose the damage to potential buyers.
-
2
Look in your local Tennessee newspaper classifieds ads and on the Auto Trader website to see what people in your area are selling similar cars for in the ads. This will let you know what you can price your car at when you place the ad.

3
Check the value of your car by using the Kelley Blue Book website. After entering in your car's details, select the "private party value" amount to get an accurate value. This lets you know what the car is actually worth, which can help you in setting the sale price.
-
4
Use the photos of the car to place ads listing the vehicle for sale in Tennessee. Online, you can post the ads on sites such as Auto Trader, Craigslist and Sell My Car. Craigslist and Sell My Car offer free ads, but you do have to pay on Auto Trader. The price varies depending on what type of ad you want and if you want it to also run in the print edition of the Tennessee Auto Trader. You also can contact your local Tennessee newspaper, such as the Tennessean in Middle Tennessee, to post a classified ad listing the car for sale.

5
Create a bill of sale on your own or using the free wizard at Rocket Lawyer (see Resources). When you have a buyer, you must complete a bill of sale with the buyer to transfer ownership of the vehicle. You should complete the bill of sale in the presence of a notary, which you can find at your local Tennessee county clerks office. The Tennessee Department of Revenue website (see Resources) has a list of offices by county. You also must sign over the title of the car to the buyer.
