How to Make a USB Broadband Modem Connection Better

Connecting a broadband modem over a USB connection is a useful alternative for those who do not own computers that have Ethernet ports. Though somewhat less stable and a bit slower than Ethernet connections, USB connections, for the most part, offer all the same features of an Ethernet-equipped modem. You may, however, encounter certain intermittent problems with your USB modem and it is a good idea to know how to address these and improve the quality of your connection rather than having to spend time of the phone with a technical support representative with your service provider.

Instructions

    • 1

Reset the modem by unplugging its power cord for 30 seconds and plugging it back in. Allow up to one minute for the modem to reboot and check the connection again for any improvement.

    • 2

Unscrew the coaxial cable on the modem's coaxial connection and check the copper needle running through the middle for any bending or damage. In some cases there may be dust, moisture or static electricity buildup affecting the quality of your connection. Pass a soft cloth over the modem's coaxial connection before reattaching the cable and checking again for any improvements in connectivity.

Purchase and install a USB to Ethernet adapter to use with your modem. While the troubleshooting steps will help improve the quality of your connection, USB has certain speed and consistency limitations, and at a certain point the only way of overcoming those is to use the more reliable, faster Ethernet connection. You can either purchase a new computer featuring Ethernet ports or use an external USB Ethernet adapter.
