How to Drain Automatic Transmission Fluid Completely From a Tundra

The Toyota Tundra is a pickup that requires a transmission fluid change every 30,000 miles or two years. If the truck is frequently used for hauling heavy loads or towing, increase the transmission fluid change to every 15,000 miles. Changing the transmission fluid means draining it completely from the vehicle to replace it with new fluid. This regular maintenance only requires a few tools and about an hour's work.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the front of the vehicle up on a pair of jack stands to reach the underside of the engine more easily. Ensure the stands are placed on a level surface.

    • 2

Slide underneath the vehicle, and locate the transmission drain pan. This is a large metal box surrounded by eight bolts. Place the 11-quart pan underneath the drain pan to catch fluid as it drains out.

    • 3

Locate the drain bolt on the pipe in front of the drain pan. Remove the bolt with a 1/2-inch socket wrench. Wait 10 to 15 minutes for the liquid to stop draining into the pan. Remove all but one bolt surrounding the drain pan. Wait while all the transmission fluid falls into the pan below.

    • 4

Clean the drain pan and bolts to remove transmission fluid residue. Reattach them. Lower the vehicle from the jacks.

    • 5

Pop the hood, and locate the transmission fluid dipstick above the drain pan. Pull out the dipstick, and place a funnel in the tube. Pour in 11 quarts of ATF+4 transmission fluid. Replace the dipstick. Close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never drive the vehicle without transmission fluid in the engine.
