Like most database software, genealogy programs vary between manufacturers. Some create simple family trees and lists, while others store graphics and videos or compile reports and books for publication. Some programs connect to online databases for research and sharing information and some write web pages from your data. The cost of genealogy programs range from free to more than $100, depending on its capabilities. To choose a program appropriate to your needs, consider the extent of your data, your budget and goals.

Assess your existing data. Do you want historical documents scanned and included in the database? Will you share your research with other genealogists or on the Internet?

Some genealogy programs are complex and it can take hours of use to realize their full capabilities. Most trial versions limit the number of individuals you can enter. Export your data and import it to another program using the GEDCOM file.
