How to Troubleshoot DirecTV HD

A DirecTV high-definition TV box offers sharp images through your satellite system. Like all electronics, though, it can sometimes experience problems such as the screen going blank for no apparent reason or the image or audio freezing. Before calling out a technician, try the following tips to see if you can deal with the picture and sound issues yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the access panel door on the front of your DirecTV HD receiver. Press the red "Reset" button. Wait for a few moments while the receiver locates the program guide. Once loaded in, your receiver has been reset. If this process fails to solve the problem, move on to Step 2.

Locate the power cord on the rear of the HD receiver. Unplug the receiver for two minutes. Plug the power cord back in. If this does not solve the receiver's issues, move on to Step 3.

    • 3

Turn off your television and receiver. Double check that all cables, jacks and so forth are properly connected to the receiver. Now turn the TV and receiver back on. Using the remote, slide the mode switch to the DirecTV position. Press "Menu," which will bring up the "Quick Menu." Choose "Settings" and then "Setup" followed by "Info & Test." Navigate to the "System Test" tab using the arrow keys on your remote. The receiver will then run through some self-checking procedures. If the test fails, then recheck all cables, your phone connection, the access card and the positioning of your satellite dish. If these are all present and correct, contact DirecTV to schedule an appointment with a technician.
