How to Fix Network Adapters

The Windows registry contains the majority of the configuration settings for devices such as network adapters. When an adapter is identified in Windows, a device driver is installed. The device driver is usually installed from the Windows driver archive. The driver will contain a default set of configuration settings that usually allow universal operation of the adapter. If you are having problems in obtaining a connection to any devices over a network connection, you may have a problem within your network adapter configuration. You can correct most issues by reinstalling the driver. Reinstalling the driver will reset the adapter settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start." Type "Device Manager" in the "Start Search" box, and press the "Enter" key. This opens the Windows Device Manager in a new window on your screen.

    • 2

Double-click "Network adapters." This displays a list of the currently installed adapters on your computer.

    • 3

Right-click your network adapter and click "Uninstall." Click the "OK" button on the "Are you sure" dialog box.

    • 4

Click "Action," at the top of the "Device Manager," and then click "Scan for hardware changes." Windows will automatically reinstall your network adapter device driver and rewrite the registry configuration settings for the device. Restart your computer to ensure all changes take effect.
