Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a piece of wood that is 3/4-inch to one-inch thick. Plywood can be used but tends to wear more easily than other types of wood.

    • 2

Tape letter stencils to the wood. Do this using large letter stencils that can be purchased at any home-improvement store. The tape you use should be applied at each corner so that the stencil holds well during the painting process.

    • 3

Trace the stencils using a pencil or pen.

    • 4

Cut out the outdoor sign letters using a scroll saw. Free Wood Puzzles suggests using a scroll saw with a #7 or #9 blade. They also suggest drilling holes for inside cuts in letters, such as B or P.

    • 5

Sand the cut wood letters lightly all over with fine sandpaper to smooth wood prior to painting.

    • 6

Use outdoor paint (in the color of your choice) to spray each letter. Outdoor paint can be found in a paint and brush form or spray form. Outdoor paint will hold up in different weather extremes better than any other types of paint. Be sure to paint in a well-ventilated area.
