How to Stop Mail Delivery Service

If you're going on vacation or won't be home for three days or more, it might be necessary to stop mail delivery service. This keeps your mailbox from becoming too full and reduces the risk of someone stealing your mail or packages. The U.S. Postal Service makes it easy to put a hold on mail service until you return home from your vacation and are available to collect your mail again. Does this Spark an idea?

      Visit the U.S. Postal Service website at usps.com.

      Click on "All Products and Service" on the toolbar at the top of the main web page.

      Locate the heading "What Would You Like to Do?" at the top of the page. Click "Put Your Mail on Hold." This will send you to the hold mail service form.

      Enter your five-digit zip code and click "Go."

      Fill in your name, address and phone number. Read the privacy act statement at the bottom of the page and click "Continue."

      Verify that the address you entered is correct. If so, click "Continue." If not, edit the address.

      Select the date the hold should begin, and click the resume date underneath to indicate when you want the hold period to end. Using the delivery options box underneath, choose whether you'd like the post office to deliver the mail that's held or whether you'd like to pick it up in person. Include any additional instructions in the box at the bottom of the page.

      Click "Continue" to move to the final screen. Verify that all the information entered is correct. If it is, click "Yes" to complete the form.

  • Mail can be held by the U.S. Postal Service for three to 30 days.

  • Requests to hold mail can be made up to two weeks in advance.
