How to Use a Slide Projector to Photograph Slides

There are many benefits to digitizing your slide collections. Photographs kept in a digital form will outlast physical copies and can be viewed and shared much more easily. The special scanners that exist for digitizing slides and film are expensive, but if you have a slide projector and a good digital camera, this task is a much more cost-efficient method than having a professional do the digitizing.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the slides to ensure removal of all dust and specks. When the slide is projected, microscopic pieces of dust are magnified and disrupt the slide's quality.

    • 2

Use a slide projector to project the slides onto a blank wall or preferably a projector screen.

    • 3

Use a high-quality digital single lens reflex camera to take a picture of the projected slide. This type of camera lets you manage the settings more than an average camera. Since the room is darkened to view the slides, you might want to take several photos and review them for lighting and quality.

    • 4

Transfer the images from your digital camera via USB cord and save them to your computer.

    • 5

Import the photos into an image editor such as Adobe Photoshop, Picasa or Paint Shop Pro to resolve any issues with quality. Apply a sharpening filter to fix blurriness and edit out any visible specks of dust that were not properly cleaned off the slide.
