How to Test a Trane Heat Pump

Depending on how the thermostat is set, a Trane heat pump works by circulating air through the house while either adding heat to the air or taking it away. A normal air conditioner takes heat out of the air and releases it outside. A heat pump has the ability to reverse this process by taking heat from the outside air and releasing it into the inside air flow. Testing a Trane heat pump is a fairly simple process. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure the power and the circuit breakers are on.

    • 2

Turn the heat pump on with the thermostat. If it is warm outside you should run it in cool mode; use heat mode if it is cold outside. Running the heat pump in heat mode if it is warm outside could cause damage to the system.

    • 3

Check the air coming from the air vents. It should have a steady flow and have a noticeable temperature difference.

    • 4

Listen to the outside unit. The compressor should be operating quietly. You should not hear any grinding, popping or squealing coming from the compressor.

    • 5

Test the reversing valve in your system by using test jumper terminals located on the valve. Check the instructions for the proper procedure to test the reversing valve for your specific model of Trane heat pump.
