How to Record Phone Calls to a Hard Drive Automatically

In a business environment, it is sometimes necessary and proper to record business phone conversations. Standard recording methods such as handheld tape and digital recorders, however, are not very effective in recording phone conversations. Luckily, with a voice modem and the appropriate software, you can automatically record your phone line conversations to your computer's hard drive.

Things You'll Need

  • Phone line splitter
  • Phone cable
  • Voice capable modem
  • Computer
  • Call recording program such as Call Corder, VPI Capture or the VRS Recording System

Instructions

      Unplug the phone line from the phone jack.

      Plug the phone line splitter into the phone jack. Plug the handset's phone line into one side of the splitter and plug a separate phone line into the other side.

      Plug the free cable into the phone jack on the back of the voice capable modem. Plug the modem's AC adapter into a power outlet.

      Open the call recording program on the computer.

      Follow the onscreen instructions to set up the program. It will automatically detect the modem you are using.

      Click the "Options" tab and select the "Configuration" option.

      Click the "Advanced" tab in the "Configuration" window and place a check mark by the "Record Incoming Calls Automatically" option. Any phone calls made on the phone line will now be automatically recorded and saved to the hard drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use these steps to invade anyone's individual privacy. You must receive the person's consent before recording her conversation.
