How to Grow Leeks in Tubes
Leeks are a member of the onion family and resemble green onions, except that they are larger. A leek is made up of multiple layers that form from the inside of the plant. During the growing process, dirt and sand can get into the center of the leek. This debris is difficult to remove completely even with thorough washing and can result in a gritty taste. Tubes installed during the growing process prevent the debris from getting inside the leeks. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Garden tiller
- Compost
- Hand spade
- Water
- Cardboard paper towel rolls
- Scissors

Look for an outdoor location that has well-drained soil and receives full sunlight. Loosen the soil in the desired planting area by setting the blade depth on a tiller to 4 inches or 5 inches and pushing it over the soil.

Spread a 1-inch to 2-inch layer of compost on top of the soil and push the tiller over the area again to mix it in thoroughly.

Dig a 1-inch-deep trench in the soil using your finger or a hand spade. Extend the trench along the length of the planting area.

Drop the leek seeds into the soil, spacing them at least 1 inch to 2 inches apart.

Cover the trench with soil and water the soil until it is completely saturated.

Wait until the leek seedlings emerge and reach a height of approximately 6 inches to 8 inches high. Place a cardboard paper towel tube directly beside the leek and use a pen to mark a location on the tube that's approximately three-quarters the height of the plant.

Cut the tube off at the marked location using a pair of scissors.

Insert the tube on top of the leek plant and push it into the ground by approximately 1/8 inch. Repeat the process to insert cardboard tubes on any remaining leeks.

Tips & Warnings
You can also use the roll from toilet paper if desired.
You can plant leek seeds in the midsummer or in the fall.
