How to Restore Paper Speaker Cones
Speaker cones are surprisingly durable given that they are made from paper products. Nonetheless, accidental punctures and excessive sound damage speaker cones. Speakers are designed to move in order to produce sound, and the sound vibrations can eventually cause rips and tears in the speaker cone. Muddy and distorted sounds are symptoms of a torn speaker cone. The good news is that you can repair rips and tears as long as the speaker coil has not been damaged.

Repairing Minor Tears
-
1
Remove the speaker or grill that covers the speaker. Examine the speaker and locate the tear.
-
2
Wipe the speaker with a soft cloth to remove loose dirt and debris.
-
-
3
Apply a small amount of silicone glue around the edges of the tear. Allow the glue to dry for the amount of time the manufacturer suggests.
Major Speaker Tears
-
4
Cut several small patches for the tear. Gauze, tissue paper and paper bags will all work as patching material. Cut the patches a little bit larger than the hole they will cover.
-
5
Apply silicone glue to the edges of the tear and allow it to dry for a few minutes.
-
6
Place one of the patches over the tear. Apply additional glue to secure the patch. Place another patch on the back side of the speaker cone behind the tear. If you are patching a substantial tear, add a second layer of patching material for more security. Allow the glue to dry completely before you test the speaker.
