How to Bypass the Traction Control on a Toyota Prius

The Prius has an integrated computer system that controls many of the car's functions.

Disabling the traction control system (TCS) on the Toyota Prius can be done within a minute using a simple technique that tricks the computer into turning TCS off. According to the CarsDirect website, many Toyota Prius owners were complaining that the TCS system was keeping their cars stuck in the snow or mud. The vehicle does not have a TCS off button like many other vehicles do but turning it off requires only slightly more work.

Instructions

1. Complete the following steps within 60 seconds to disable the TCS. First, turn the ignition switch to "On." Do not turn it to "Ready." This can be achieved by pressing the "Power" button twice (do not press the brake pedal).

2. Press the gas pedal fully in twice with the transmission in "Park."

3. Engage the parking brake for safety. Pop the transmission into "Neutral" and press the gas pedal all the way down twice.

4. Put the car back into "Park" and then press the gas pedal down fully twice. The car should display a "!Car!" message in the top left corner of the main LCD screen.

5. Press in the brake pedal and switch the ignition to the "Start" position without engaging the "Ready" position. This will start the engine. If the steps have been followed correctly and completed within 60 seconds then the car should have the traction control disengaged. To turn the TCS on again simply turn off the car and turn it back on.
