How to Change the Ink Cartridge in an HP Deskjet 640
The HP Deskjet 640 is a series of low-cost inkjet printers for home and educational customers, able to print as many as six single-color pages per minute in draft quality. The Deskjet 640 is compatible with operating systems as old as Windows 3.1 and, in some cases, MS-DOS. As a result, if you are using a Deskjet 640, it is likely that you have owned it for a long time. Replacing the ink cartridges is a required skill in owning any inkjet printer, and if you find that your pictures and documents are missing colors or appear faded and low-quality, it is time for you to change the ink in your printer.

1
Make sure that the Deskjet 640 is turned on and not printing. Open the center cover of the printer, and wait for the ink cartridge carrier to move to the middle and stop.
-
2
Grasp the raised portion of the ink cartridge that you need to replace, and tilt it forward until it clicks out of the holder. Lift the cartridge out of the Deskjet 640, and set it aside. In the Deskjet 640, the color ink cartridge is in the left side of the carrier, and the black cartridge is on the right. If you are installing a photo ink cartridge, remove the black cartridge.

Remove the new Deskjet 640 ink cartridge from the box, and peel the clear strip off of the bottom. Do not touch the metal contacts or ink nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge.
-
4
Lower the new ink cartridge into the empty compartment with the nozzles pointing down. After you have lowered the cartridge into the compartment fully, tilt it forward until it snaps into place.
-
5
Replace the second Deskjet 640 ink cartridge if needed, and then close the lid. The printer is ready to use when it becomes silent.

Tips & Warnings
Only remove an ink cartridge from your Deskjet 640 when you are ready to replace it with a new one. Leaving an ink container empty can cause the print head to dry out, and the Deskjet 640 prints only when two ink cartridges are present.
