How to Recalibrate the Screen on a TomTom GPS

Because the TomTom GPS device features a touch screen, you must calibrate it properly in order to use it. An improperly calibrated screen will not respond to a user's touch commands as it should, which can cause frustration. Recalibrating the TomTom can be tricky. If this doesn't work, you may be able to get the device repaired at a local retailer.

Remove the memory card from the TomTom and press the "On" button. When the device's logo appears on screen press and hold the "On" button. The diagnostics screen should appear.

Write down the touchscreen calibration numbers. These numbers appear in the second column, near the bottom. There are four sets of three numbers. The first number is the value for the X-axis, the second is the max for the X-axis, the third is the value for the Y-axis and the last is the max value for the Y-axis.

Insert the memory card from the TomTom into a card reader on your computer. Open the "calibration" file in Notepad and change the values to more appropriate values. To shift the screen up, change both Y-values, making them larger. To move the screen right, change both X-values, making them larger. Increase both values on a single axis by the same number.

Save this file as "calib.txt" and "cal.txt."

Copy and paste the file into the TomTom folder on the memory card.

Reinsert the memory card in the TomTom and turn on the device. The screen should be re-calibrated. If you wish to alter the values further, remove the memory card and recreate the Notepad files.
