Instructions for the Realistic Sound Level Meter

Is your stereo too loud? Is it bothering your neighbors or, worse yet, damaging your hearing? Use RadioShack's Realistic Sound-Level Meter to check the SPL (sound pressure level) to measure how loud your equipment is.

• Nine-volt battery

Instructions

1. Install a battery in your Realistic Sound-Level Meter. You can do this by setting "Range" to the "Off" position. Remove the battery cover on the back of the meter. Insert a nine-volt battery. Replace the battery cover.

2. Set the "Sound Range." If your sound is really loud, start by setting the range at 120 and move down till you get a reading.

3. Set the "Weighting." You have two selections on your meter for "Weighting." Select "A" on the display to determine the noise level of an area. Select "C" on the display for determining the sound level of musical materials.

4. Set the response time. If you are OK with your meter updating every 0.5 seconds, set the response time to "Slow." If you need it faster you can set the response time to "Fast."

5. Point the microphone on the end of your meter toward the sound source. Your meter will begin to take readings and will display the continuous average sound level.
