The Brother Profile 831 sewing machine is one of the most popular brands for sewing machines; it offers basic as well as advanced models equipped to perform a variety of stitch functions. Instructions

    • 1

Insert the needle in your sewing machine. Needles come in a variety of thicknesses, depending on the intricacy that you want in your sewing. Turn the wheel on the side of your machine to move the needle bar to its highest point. Undo the needle clamp located on the side of the needle opening. Hold the needle with the flat side facing upward and push it up as far as it will go into the opening. Tighten the needle clamp and make sure it is firmly in place.

    • 2

Thread the machine after you insert the needle. Raise the "pressure foot" -- the lever located above the needle -- and turn the wheel on the side of the machine until the needle is at its highest position. Place the spool of thread on the spool holder on the top of your machine and stretch the thread across the top at the far left side.

    • 3

Extend the thread down the vertical slot in front of the machine and then take it back up the parallel slot right next to it. You will notice a thread "take-up" lever. Loop the thread from right to left through this lever and bring the thread back to the first vertical slot. Hook the thread behind the thread holder which is directly above the needle, and pass the thread from the front to the back through the needle.

    • 4

Push the bobbin winder to the right until it touches the small gray wheel. Hold the end of the thread and gently push the foot paddle to make the bobbin begin winding. Continue to do so until the bobbin holds the thread on its own and the bobbin is full. Remove the bobbin and place it in the bobbin case.

    • 5

Insert the bobbin case into the machine. Flip open the machine and slide the case into the sewing machine's bobbin location, called a shuttle. Push the bobbin case all the way into the shuttle and get the bobbin thread up where the needle thread is. Your machine is ready to sew.

Tips & Warnings

  • Inspect the needle before inserting it into the machine to make sure it is not bent or broken. Such needles result in poor quality stitches, or no stitches at all.

  • Make sure that the tensions of the thread are balanced in order to give you good quality stitches. If the tensions are not equal, this will result in loose or untidy stitches.

  • Since Brother sewing machines come with a variety of patterns, choose one displayed on the front by adjusting the dial.

  • Clean your machine after use and oil it frequently so it works effectively.
