How to Remove a Divorced Spouse From an Auto Title in Michigan

If your ex-spouse agreed to turn a vehicle over to you during your divorce, you will have to transfer the title in order to have your ex-spouse's name removed from the title. Because you are no longer married to each other, it is considered a gift from your ex-spouse and you will be required to pay a 6 percent use tax based on the value of the vehicle in Michigan.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather all the necessary paperwork and information, which includes the title of the vehicle, the VIN and an accurate odometer reading.

    • 2

Sign and date the title, and ask your ex-spouse to sign and date the title as well.

    • 3

Locate the closest Michigan DMV office to your home. You can use the Michigan DMV.org website's DMV Locator (see Resources) to find an office by typing in your zip code and hitting "Enter."

    • 4

Take the title to the Michigan DMV office along with a check for the amount of $15, which covers the processing fee for title transfer as of November 2010. You should also bring a blank check to cover the cost of the tax.

    • 5

Submit the title transfer request along with the processing fee and tax amount. The title transfer will take effect the same day, but you may have to wait two to six weeks to receive a new copy of the vehicle title in the mail.
