How to Change a Fuel Filter on a 2001 Ford Ranger
Fuel filters are designed to keep all sediments out of your engine to ensure a longer life. The fuel filter on the 2001 Ford Ranger needs replacement every 30,000 miles. The fuel pump sucks the fuel out of the gas tank and into the fuel line. The fuel line then carries the fuel to the "Inlet" port of the fuel filter. The filter removes impurities from the fuel before releasing it through the "Outlet" port and into the engine. If the fuel filter is clogged, the engine will not run properly, and may not crank at all.
Instructions
-
-
1
Unscrew the gas cap from the gas tank to relieve pressure from the fuel lines.
-
2
Locate the fuel filter on the driver's side. The fuel filter will be on the inside rail in front of the gas tank. You can reach the fuel filter without lifting the vehicle, but if you feel it would be easier to reach the fuel filter by lifting the vehicle on a rack, then go ahead. Without the lift it might be beneficial to use a creeper for increased mobility underneath the vehicle.

-
3
Remove the fuel lines from the filter by pushing the end of the fuel line disconnect tool in front of the fuel line while gently removing it.
-
4
Place a bucket under the fuel lines to catch the fuel that was left inside the lines.
-
5
Remove the fuel filter by removing the clamps that hold the fuel filter inside the bracket.
-
6
Install the new fuel filter by using the clamps to install it in the bracket.
-
7
Reinstall the fuel lines and put the gas cap back on the fuel tank.
-
8
Turn the ignition three or four times to let the fuel run through the lines and to prime the fuel filter.
-
9
Start the car and inspect the vehicle for leaks.
