How to File Taxes Online in North Carolina for Free
Most North Carolina residents must file a state tax return and the state provides free resources to help you get this done. North Carolina employs the use of private, third-party companies to help you file your North Carolina taxes online for free, assuming you meet certain age and/or income requirements. Go to the official website of the state of North Carolina

Click "Online Services" in the left column.

Click the "plus" symbol next to "Tax Services" to expand this option. Click the "State Online Tax Filing and Payment" option.

Click "E-File" in the list of electronic services in the "Individuals" section. Click "Free or Low-Cost Electronic Filing Options" under the list of E-File services.

Look at the name of the companies listed in the "Eligibility Requirements for Free File" box. Read the age, residency and adjusted-gross-income eligibility requirements listed for each company. For example, OLT Online Taxes allows anyone under the age of 20 to file North Carolina state taxes for free with no income requirement.

Click the name of a company for which you meet the eligibility requirements. Click "Continue" to confirm that you're leaving the North Carolina Department of Revenue website and selecting the tax-filing company you've chosen.

Click the "Start" or "Register" button to create an account with the tax-filing company you selected. Follow the on-screen prompts and online forms to answer questions about your income, filing status and other personal information. Click the "Finish" or "Submit" button when you're ready to submit your electronic state tax return.
