How to Negotiate the Best Value for Your Money

How to Negotiate the Best Value for Your Money thumbnail
You can negotiate a better deal on the things you buy.

No matter what you buy, you want to make sure you get the best value for the money. Fortunately, many businesses are willing to match the prices of their competitors or even negotiate a lower price or better terms on the products they sell. The key to getting the best prices on the products you need is to be prepared. The more information you have about what you want and how much it should cost, the more successful you can be at negotiating a lower price.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather as much information as you can about the product you want to buy. Shop for the product at as many different stores as you can, including discount retailers, department stores, specialty shops and online retailers. Note the price of the product at each outlet. Check the model number listed at each store to make sure you are comparing the same product.

    • 2

Check weekly sales fliers and promotional ads for lower prices on the product you want to buy. Also check Internet retailers for specials on the product. Keep sales fliers that list the item at a lower price. Print out sales ads from Internet retailers.

    • 3

Visit the store where you want to make the purchase and ask to see the manager. The sales clerks probably do not have the authority to lower prices or change the terms of the sale, but the manager does.

    • 4

Show the manager the sales fliers and promotional information from competing stores. Ask the retailer to match the price shown in those ads. Each store has its own price-matching policy, so be prepared to do some negotiating over the terms of the sale.

    • 5

Offer to make the purchase in cash. Be ready to walk away if the store manager is not willing to meet your price. You might have to visit more than one store with cash in hand to get the terms and price you want on the product you wish to purchase.
