Homemade Greeting Card Organizer

Opening up the mailbox and pulling out a greeting card can really make your day, but once the envelope is opened and the card has spent time on the mantle, it may begin to collect dust or get in the way. Don't throw out the personal sentiment; instead, create a custom home for the greeting cards you receive with an organizer box. With supplies from around the house, create an attractive way to store and easily access greeting cards.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lid from a shoebox, and set it aside. Use scissors, glue and wrapping paper to wrap the outside of the main part of the shoebox. For a festive way to organize holiday greeting cards, use leftover holiday wrapping paper, or paper to suit any other occasion or the home's decor. Let it dry.

    • 2

Wrap the lid of the shoebox with contrasting or the same roll of wrapping paper, and let it dry.

    • 3

Hold a manila file folder over the top of the shoebox to measure its width, with the file folder tab in the center. Mark the edges of the box on the folder and cut to size. Repeat to trim as many folders as sections preferred for the organizer box.

    • 4

Write a card subject on each of the dividers, such as "Halloween" and "Valentine's Day" or assign one tab per person in the family.

    • 5

Draw a line of glue down the left and right edges of a file folder cutout. Press the file folder into the shoebox, gently pressing the sides of the box so they attach to the file folder and support it standing up.

    • 6

Add the next file folder tab divider into the shoebox, leaving a couple of inches of room to store the cards between each divider. Repeat until the dividers are all in place.

    • 7

Flip up the box lid so it is upside down, and nest the shoebox inside the lid.

Tips & Warnings

  • Other shoebox wrapping options include pages from magazines, comics from the Sunday paper, brown paper bags from the grocery store and decorative bags from shopping trips.

  • Because the shoebox's lid won't fit over the tabs that stick up from inside the box, use the lid as a base, recycle it or save it for another project.
