How to Make a Plain Text Resume

A resume is a document that contains the basic information an employer needs to know about you to decide whether you might be a good fit for a job opening. Your resume is often the most important part of earning a job interview. Standard resumes are typically composed with word processing programs that make use of various formatting options to optimize space and to make the document look appealing. Plain text resumes are electronic resumes that are sometimes required for electronic resume submissions that use a simple text file format that has no special formatting options.

Instructions

Open your resume using your word processing program.

    • 2

Click the upper-left of the document before the first word, hold down the mouse button, drag the mouse across the document until all the text is highlighted, then release the mouse button. You also can hold down the "Control" key and press "A" to highlight all the text.

    • 3

Right-click the highlighted text and click "Copy." You also can hold down "Control" and press "C" to copy the text.

    • 4

Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and then "Notepad." Notepad is a basic text editor built into PCs.

    • 5

Right-click the body of the text editor and choose "Paste." You can also left-click the body, hold down "Control" and press "V" to paste. The text you copied from your resume will appear in the text editor in a plain text format without any of the incompatible formatting used in your word processing program.

    • 6

Click "Format" and then click "Word Wrap." This will allow the text on each line to continue on a new line when it reaches the end of the window instead of continuing past the edge of the window.

    • 7

Click "File," "Save" and enter a name for the resume. Then click "Save." The resume will be saved in a plain text format.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plain text files do not allow for many formatting options such as bold letters, underlining and italics. Plain text files can contain any character that you can type with the keys on a standard keyboard, spaces and capital letters.
