How to Dye Bone Beads

Bone beads are often used in crafts and, even though the natural color is quite beautiful, dyeing the beads can bring out the texture and add a certain depth and richness to the beads. This creates an antique look, which provides more choices for craft and jewelry projects. There are two different options when dyeing beads and neither require special tools, merely tea bags or flavored drink mix and the patience to let the beads color over night.

Instructions

  1. Tea dyeing

    • 1

Place tea bags in a bowl and pour enough boiling water to fill the bowl almost to the top.

    • 2

Place the bone beads in the bowl and let them soak overnight.

    • 3

Rinse the beads and dry them with a paper towel.

    Dyeing

    • 4

Soak the beads for about 15 minutes in a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar. This will soften the surface.

    • 5

Dye the beads by soaking them in a bowl of powdered flavored drink mix, such as Kool-Aid, mixed with water. Soak the beads until they have reached the color you want.

    • 6

Rinse the beads with water to get rid of access coloring and place them in bags or containers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not store beads of different colors in the same container, as the colors to mix.
