How to Use the Wooden Dummy Technique
The wooden dummy martial artists was originally created so that artists could practice a martial art known as Wing Chun. This art form was designed for close combat, which uses a series of blocks, punches, and kicks to incapacitate the opponent. The Wing Chun dummy is used to develop coordination, timing, proper techniques and the adequate application of force. One by-product of using the Wing Chun dummy is the toughening up and strengthening of your body while you practice. There are over 108 known techniques that can be used in practice with the Wing Chun wooden dummy.

Set aside a time each day to practice on your own or with an instructor. Having an instructor helps because he can watch your form and offer tips and corrections when necessary. Wear stretchable and breathable clothing.

Practice your blocks on the Wing Chun dummy. The beautiful thing about practicing by yourself is that you can practice your moves in any order you like. Since there are 108 distinct techniques, you can pick and choose which ones to practice first. They are normally broken up into blocks, punches and kicks.

Practice your punches. Wing Chun punches are usually very short-distance, with the hands alternated at a very rapid speed and only the first two knuckles used. You will typically begin with your hands balled into fists, palms up and against your body, and then you will throw your punch. As soon as you make contact with your dummy, pull back with your hand and then push the other one forward; continue until you are flowing and moving at a rapid pace.

Practice your kicks. Wing Chun kicks normally stay low on the wooden dummy because this is a close-combat martial art. These kicks are usually used to trip your opponent or even break a bone.

Tips & Warnings
It is important to practice each technique properly with the wooden dummy. If you do not do certain moves correctly, you could end up breaking a bone.
Watch instructional videos or hire an instructor to show you the proper forms for the punches, kicks and blocks. Failure to learn proper techniques before practicing may result in pulled muscles or tendons or lead to broken bones.
