How to Safely Use a Butane Torch

How to Safely Use a Butane Torch thumbnail
Butane torches are commonly used for small electronics repair.

Butane torches offer a wide variety of applications, such as cooking and soldering. Most butane torches are powered by a refillable tank or a removable canister. The difference between a butane torch and a simple butane lighter is the amount of heat generated and length of the flame. Butane torches can reach temperatures up to 2,500 degrees. Safe operation of the tool requires a cautious hand and an attentive eye. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the torch for signs of leaks. Clean off any butane that leaked out while filling the canister. Make sure the canister is fully secured and that the nozzle is not clogged or dirty.

    • 2

Clear the work area of flammable fuels or materials. Remove loose clothing or jewelry if possible; otherwise, secure them.

    • 3

Light the torch according to your model-specific instructions. Point the end outward when lighting teh torch so the flame ignites away from you. Allow the torch to rest for two full minutes if it will not light initially; this clears out any residual fuel.

    • 4

Keep the flame pointed away from you while in use.

    • 5

Turn the flame off when it's not in use. Disengage the butane cartridge, if applicable, and store it separately.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear protective eye and hand gear when operating an open flame.
