How to Play a DVD Rip File

How to Play a DVD Rip File thumbnail
DVD files can be "ripped" to your computer where you can watch them without the original disc.

Videos that are "ripped" from DVD movies are often encoded on your computer in the VOB format. Many video players can't use this format without getting help from special software called a codec. If you download a codec designed for the native program Windows Media Player, you can watch the ripped DVD files directly from that native media player, which comes pre-loaded on most Windows computers.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the download link for Media Player Codec. This works with all versions of Windows Media Player, as of November 2010. Double-click the installation file to install the codec.

    • 2

Right-click on your DVD rip file.

    • 3

Select "Open with Windows Media Player" from the options there to begin playing the video.
