How to Break a Link on a Motorcycle Chain

Breaking a motorcycle chain link is made easy with a chain-breaker tool.

There are two common reasons for needing to break a motorcycle chain: Your chain has stretched so much that you can't adjust it anymore and you need to shorten it, or you have an "endless" chain and want to remove it without having to remove the rear wheel and front sprocket cover. Thanks to a special tool called a "chain-breaker," you can punch out a link with a minimum of fuss.

Instructions

  1. Using Chain-Breaker

    • 1

Park your motorcycle on a level, paved surface.

    • 2

Move to the motorcycle's rear sprocket. Choose a link on the back of the sprocket. This is where you will mount the chain-breaker.

    • 3

Slide the chain-breaker over one of the link pins on the chain. The chain-breaker looks like a "C-clamp" with a hollow end. Grasp the handles on the chain-breaker. Hold the chain-breaker stationary, with the handle on the body. Turn the handle on the threaded part of the chain-breaker to push the link pin into the hollow end of the breaker. Push the pin all the way out of the chain. If you have a "mini" chain-breaker without handles, hold the body with pliers and turn the threaded part with a wrench.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check your sprockets for excessive wear. Lubricate your chain frequently. If you have an "O-ring" type chain, be sure to get lubricant for that type of chain.

  • If you are removing links because you can't adjust the chain anymore, you should replace the chain, because it has exceeded its useful, safe lifespan. There is an increased danger of breakage, which could damage your engine or lock up your rear tire.
