How can I get to sleep?
Not being able to sleep is no fun, especially when you have to get up early in the morning. There are many possible causes of insomnia, but often it’s the result of stress, tension or anxiety. Luckily, there are lots of different things you can do to help yourself sleep.

1
Relax. An hour or two before bed, make it your priority to concentrate on relaxation. Listen to some soothing music, light candles and take a nice hot bath. If you’re lucky enough to have an obliging person around, ask for a massage to relieve tension in your muscles.
-
2
Create a better sleeping environment. Is your pillow uncomfortable? Is there an illuminated alarm clock in the room? Are the curtains too light? Get rid of them. Make your sleeping environment as comfortable as possible. Sleep on a firm mattress on your back in a well-ventilated room.

Try herbal remedies. Health shops, pharmacies and even larger supermarkets stock natural products designed to help you get a good night’s sleep. These include “sleep teas” and pill supplements, which generally contain the natural relaxant valerian. These are good choices, as they are nonaddictive.
-
4
Set a sleep schedule. Don’t nap during the day. Don’t sleep in. Go to bed at the same time each night. Get up and do something if you can’t sleep in the middle of the night until you feel tired again.
-
5
Exercise. Make sure to take some form of exercise every day. This will help you relax later on, and should help tire you out.
-
6
See a doctor. It’s possible a physical condition is contributing to your insomnia. If not, the doctor may be able to provide you with more advice or with sleeping medication.

Tips & Warnings
Be very careful if taking sleeping tablets, as these can be highly addictive. If you are prescribed these, use sparingly as a last resort, not every night.
