How to Make a Solar Garden Fountain
Fountains help create a relaxing atmosphere in your garden. You can easily make a solar fountain to nestle in a flower bed or act as a garden focal point. You make a solar fountain the same way you would make an electric fountain --- the difference lies in the type of fountain pump used in the project. The other components are the same; you'll need a reservoir to hold the water and a channel to carry the water to a decorative spout or to the top of the reservoir. Solar fountain pumps are available from landscape and garden suppliers and from online retailers. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Select an urn that's large enough to make a statement in a flower bed or your garden. Decorative urns are available in a variety of shapes and sizes; select one that suits your outdoor decor. You'll need at least an 8-inch-diameter by 10-inch-tall urn to make the fountain.
-
2
Stack bricks inside the urn to the halfway point. The bricks make a raised platform for the fountain pump. This makes it easier for you to reach the pump inside a large urn.

3
Attach the power cord to the solar fountain pump and to the solar panel. Place the solar panel in a spot where it will receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. The more sunlight the panel receives, the longer your pump will run and the stronger the water pressure will be.
-
4
Drape the cord over the side of the urn and place the pump on top of the bricks. Solar cords are thinner than electrical cords, so it will not be as visible from a distance. You could also paint it to match the urn, if you like.
-
5
Attach the fountainhead to the solar fountain pump. Extend the fountainhead to a few inches beneath the rim of the urn. If you are using a wide-mouth urn, you can extend the fountainhead above the water line. If you extend the fountainhead too much, the water will not fall back into the urn.
-
6
Fill the urn with water. When the solar cells have stored enough energy, the fountainhead will begin to spout water.
